Metacognitive skills in low-code app development: Work-integrated learning in information systems development

Low-code platforms can provide a learning environment that integrates academic theory with practical experiences, allowing students to experience real-world ISD projects. Such pedagogy is known as work-integrated (WIL). In low-code WIL course, the focus on development experiences and delivery of business application based client’s requirements. Yet, may inhibit metacognition, which essential for succeed in future digital innovations. Without struggle learn how be reflective about their learning. This study uses mixed-method design draws Flavell’s (1979) theoretical framework examine metacognition context WIL. particular, examines effect learner-oriented factors task-oriented its impact outcomes, such knowledge confidence, app delivery, grade. The quantitative results indicate influenced by motivation, strategic approach, autonomy, whereas self-efficacy beliefs have no effect. outcomes are also achieved. Qualitative (students’ essays apps) corroborate while providing additional insights into showing platform agile practices metacognition. Overall, this offers IS educators better understanding foster learning-to-learn experiences.
